Summary
Share lived experience and peer support with autistic individuals in the community.Detailed description
Core tasks
- Helping mentees to navigate daily routines, providing ‘hand holding’ guidance, physical support, role modelling self-management, and providing low–moderate wellbeing and mental health support.
- Providing one-to-one support, identifying the best environment and blend of social/interests-based time, to optimise outcomes.
- Further peer engagement by building on the existing parent/carer and peer-led autism WhatsApp groups.
- Support step-down engagement from other services for sustainable, long-term change and improved individual engagement.
Personal specification
The volunteer needs to have, warmth, sensitivity, understanding, patience and a sense of humour, with a mature flexible outlook and enough time to volunteer regularly.
Be able to give at least six months’ commitment.
No specific experience is necessary as training will be given.
Support offered
- Induction training is provided before volunteers take up their roles
- Ongoing training is provided by the coordinator
- Support/supervision sessions provided
- Reimbursement of expenses
- Public liability insurance cover
Any other information
- Volunteers are required to complete an application form
- Provide details of two referees (who are not related and have known the applicant for a minimum of two years)
- Complete a DBS check
- Attend any training required
