Purpose of the Volunteer Role:

This volunteer role supports an online peer group for carers, family members, and friends of people who self-harm. Group runs on the 3rd Tuesday of every month 7pm start. You must be available during this time and there is opportunity of additional volunteer growth/support around this.


Volunteers help create a safe, understanding, and non-judgmental environment where participants can share experiences, reduce isolation, and access emotional support.


Main Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Co-facilitate online support group sessions via a secure digital platform.
  • Welcome participants and help establish a supportive, respectful group atmosphere.
  • Offer empathetic listening and maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Support individuals in accessing relevant information and resources.
  • Monitor group discussions to ensure safety and adherence to group guidelines.
  • Attend regular supervision, debriefs, and ongoing training.


Volunteer Skills and Qualities:

  • Experience of self-harm and understanding of self-care.
  • Empathy, warmth, and non-judgmental communication.
  • Confidence using online platforms and digital communication tools.
  • Sensitivity to issues around self-harm and mental health.
  • Reliability, emotional resilience, and good teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding principles.

Volunteer Commitment:

Approximately 2–4 hours per month (online group sessions plus preparation and reflection time).

Training and Support Provided:

Comprehensive induction and ongoing supervision are provided. Volunteers receive training in active listening, online facilitation, and safeguarding.
