Support adults on the Improving Lives course to build confidence, develop skills, and explore volunteering opportunities.

Improving Lives is a 6-week volunteering course run by Voluntary Action Coventry. The Improving Lives course consists of 12 structured sessions of engaging activities, discussions, visits and support that take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10.30am to 12.30pm. 

The course aim is to support participants to focus on their futures and realise their potential, improving confidence in their own skills and abilities and what they have to offer, and to learn about and practice elements necessary for finding, applying for and securing volunteer or work roles.

🕒 Hours: This is a flexible role, ideally requiring 2-5 hours per week during the course.

📍 Location: Methodist Central Hall, Warwick Lane, Coventry, CV1 2HA

🤝 Main Role

As an Improving Lives Support Volunteer, you'll help participants feel welcome, supported, and confident during sessions. You'll provide encouragement, practical assistance, and additional support where needed to help people get the most from the programme.

🌟 What You'll Be Doing

  • Supporting participants to engage in activities and discussions.
  • Helping people build confidence and take part in sessions.
  • Assisting participants who may need help with reading, writing, or understanding tasks.
  • Setting up the room, including arranging tables and chairs and preparing refreshments.
  • Helping to create a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
  • Supporting individuals who may be feeling shy, anxious, or lacking confidence.
  • Letting staff know if someone may need additional support.

Optional Opportunities

If you'd like to get more involved, you may help with:

  • Supporting participants during visits to local charities, community groups, and organisations.
  • Assisting people with additional learning needs or those who speak English as an additional language.
  • Helping prepare resources, activities, and session materials.
  • Supporting with simple administrative tasks such as attendance registers and feedback forms.

✅ What we're looking for 

Essential

  • Experience supporting, encouraging or working with others through work, volunteering, education or community involvement.
  • Friendly, patient and non-judgemental approach.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to encourage others while respecting boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Understanding of the value of volunteering and awareness of different learning needs and abilities.
  • Willingness to complete induction and relevant training.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting people in learning, community or group settings.
  • Experience working with neurodivergent people and/or those with mental health needs.
  • Ability to adapt communication to different needs.
  • Confidence supporting people with literacy, learning activities, or English as an additional language.
  • Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Relevant training or qualifications in education, community work, health and social care, or related fields.
