Volunteer as an educational mentor with REUK! Support young refugees navigating education in Coventry helping them unlock their potential for a brighter future!

Refugee Education UK (REUK) is dedicated to supporting young refugees and asylum seekers in overcoming educational barriers, ensuring they thrive in school, college, and beyond. Our mentoring program pairs young refugees with dedicated volunteers who provide support, guidance, and encouragement to help them achieve their academic and personal goals.

What Does an Educational Mentor Do?

As a mentor, you will:

  • Meet regularly for a minimum of 1 hour a week with a young refugee to provide academic and pastoral support.
  • Help them develop study skills, navigate educational challenges, and plan for their future.
  • Encourage their confidence and independence by acting as a positive role model.

Mentoring sessions usually take place in the weekdays in a public location, such as a library. We are open to volunteers across the West Midlands including Birmingham, Coventry Sandwell and Dudley. We also ask for a commitment of 6 months.

We unfortunately cannot cover travel costs but we aim to match mentors and menteegeographically close to one another, as mentoring usually happens in a public space such as a library or a coffee shop. This helps make sessions easier to attend and more sustainable for both the mentor and the young person.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome mentors from all backgrounds who:

  • Are passionate about education and equal opportunities.
  • Have strong communication skills, patience, and empathy.
  • Are committed to making a positive impact on a young person’s life.

No specific teaching experience is required, all we ask is a willingness to help and learn and a commitment to your mentee! We provide training, ongoing support, and resources to ensure you feel confident in your role.
