As a Gym Bros Leader, you’ll be matched with a young person and provide 1:1 gym-based mentoring through Guardian Ballers’ Gym Bros programme.

Using exercise and positive mentoring, you’ll help a young person build confidence, improve their wellbeing, develop healthier habits and have positive conversations about mental and emotional wellbeing.

You don’t need to be a personal trainer or mental health professional — just be reliable, encouraging and passionate about supporting young people.

What you'll be doing

  • Meet regularly with your matched young person for 1:1 gym sessions
  • Get to know their interests, experience and personal goals
  • Exercise alongside and encourage them
  • Support positive conversations around wellbeing
  • Help them work towards achievable goals
  • Build a positive and appropriate mentoring relationship
  • Complete simple feedback and attendance forms
  • Stay in regular contact with the Guardian Ballers team
  • Follow safeguarding and health and safety procedures

Skills and qualities

  • Passion for supporting young people
  • Interest in fitness, physical activity and wellbeing
  • Friendly, approachable and encouraging
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Reliable and consistent
  • Able to build positive relationships and maintain professional boundaries
  • Committed to safeguarding
  • Willing to complete required training and checks

No personal training or previous mentoring experience is required.

What you'll gain

  • Make a meaningful difference to a young person
  • Gain experience in mentoring, youth work and wellbeing
  • Develop communication, leadership and relationship-building skills
  • Build confidence working 1:1 with young people
  • Receive training, guidance and ongoing support
  • Connect with other Gym Bros Leaders
  • Use your interest in fitness to make a positive impact in the community

Availability

Sessions are arranged around the availability of the young person and their Gym Bros Leader. We ask volunteers to be as reliable and consistent as possible.

Session frequency and availability will be discussed before you are matched.

Training and support

Guardian Ballers will provide relevant training, guidance and ongoing support throughout your involvement.

Gym Bros sessions are arranged around the availability of the young person and their matched Gym Bros Leader, rather than taking place at one fixed weekly time.
