About Geek.Zone
At Geek.Zone, we create inclusive, safe, and friendly spaces for geeks of all backgrounds. We use shared interests—from gaming and coding to cosplay and creative arts—to help reduce social isolation and promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
While we already have an In-Person Safeguarding Officer looking after physical meetups, our digital community is growing rapidly. We need a dedicated Online Safeguarding Officer to help maintain a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment across our online platforms.
Role Overview
As our Online Safeguarding Officer, you will be the guardian of our digital community spaces. You will help keep a watchful eye on our online channels, serve as a trusted point of contact for members raising safety or wellbeing concerns, and follow established procedures to investigate, resolve, or escalate issues.
Key Responsibilities
* Digital Space Monitoring: Keep an active eye on our Discord server and social media channels for any potential safeguarding risks, harassment, severe distress, or policy breaches alongside our moderators.
* Point of Contact: Act as a confidential, approachable point of contact for members, moderators, or volunteers to report safeguarding or safety concerns.
* Incident Follow-Up: Speak directly with individuals involved in reported incidents to gather context, provide support, and attempt peaceful resolutions in line with our code of conduct.
* Reporting & Escalation: Maintain clear documentation of any safeguarding incidents, file formal reports where necessary, and escalate serious issues to the Board of Trustees or external authorities as appropriate.
* Policy Support: Work alongside our In-Person Safeguarding Lead to ensure our online safety practices remain up to date and effective.
What We’re Looking For
* Enhanced DBS Check: You must hold (or be eligible to undergo) an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
* Mental Health Knowledge: Prior experience or training in mental health support, mental health first aid, or crisis awareness is strongly preferred but not mandatory.
* Empathy & Sound Judgment: Calm under pressure, approachable, impartial, and capable of handling delicate or confidential situations with discretion.
* Online & Discord Familiarity: Comfortable navigating Discord channels, direct messages, and standard social media moderation workflows.
* Clear Communication: Able to listen actively, conduct sensitive conversations constructively, and write clear incident notes.
What You’ll Get Out of It
* Official Reference: We will gladly provide a detailed volunteer reference highlighting your safeguarding, crisis handling, and leadership capabilities.
* Valuable Experience: Build direct safeguarding management experience within a registered charity and non-profit digital space.
* Direct Community Impact: Play a crucial role in protecting vulnerable members and keeping our online community a safe haven for geeks everywhere.
* Supportive Environment: You won't be working in isolation—you will have direct backup from our In-Person Safeguarding Officer and the Board of Trustees.
