Futures Unlocked is recruiting volunteer mentors, to offer practical, social and sometimes spiritual support to our clients, who are prison leavers.

The Role:

As a volunteer mentor, you will support our clients with our pathways. The mentoring service is designed to help reduce reoffending.

Examples of client support could include being alongside the client to:

  • Access accommodation,
  • Pursue welfare benefits claims,
  • Attend Probation appointments,
  • Register with a GP,
  • Work on IT skills as so much is now done online,
  • Offer support around family matters,
  • Help them to work towards education or employment
  • Find a faith community to join.

Commitment:

We are looking for volunteers who can give 1-2 hours a week for a minimum commitment of 6 to 9 months. The committed relationship between mentor and client can make such a huge difference, especially when a client knows they can trust and rely on you!

Skills and Characteristics:

  • Ideally available for at least 2 hours per week when client is in the community
  • Must be able to commit for a minimum of 6-9 months
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Trustworthy and reliable
  • Committed
  • Non-judgemental
  • Enthusiastic and optimistic
  • Caring & approachable
  • Realistic
  • Willing to work under guidance of volunteer co-ordinator
  • But, no previous experience of working with offenders necessary.
