Our talks cover signs and symptoms, myths and misconceptions, the NHS breast screening programme, and what you can do to help reduce your risk of breast cancer.
As a public health talks volunteer, you’ll deliver talks on behalf of Breast Cancer Now, helping us spread our key messages on early detection and prevention, championing our work in communities across the UK.
You’ll receive full training from our public health, inclusion and awareness team so you’re confident to deliver our public health talks. This could be visiting workplaces and community groups to deliver talks in person or online, using platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
This is a flexible role which can be delivered from your home or in your local community, based on your availability.
We’re looking for public health volunteers across the UK, but have a particular need for volunteers based in the West Midlands and North East of England.
What skills and qualities do I need?
- An interest in raising awareness of breast cancer
- Enthusiasm and motivation to make a difference
- A confident public speaker with excellent communication and people skills
- A commitment to represent Breast Cancer Now in a professional manner, working within our policies and guidelines
- Reliable, organised, and able to work independently using initiative
- To deliver talks online, you should be confident using IT, have access to a laptop, desktop, or similar device (tablet or mobile phones are not suitable) and have some experience of using video conferencing platforms
What commitment is required?
- Deliver online and/or in-person public health talks. The number of talks depends on demand, but we aim for each volunteer to deliver at least 6 talks a year
- You’ll need to have some availability during the working week to deliver talks, rather than only evening or weekend availability
What training and support will I receive?
- Attend a 2-hour welcome workshop, introducing you to the charity
- Attend training via zoom in one of the following groups:
- Monday 12, 19, 26 May from 6 – 8pm
- Tuesday 13, 20, 27 May from 2 – 4pm
- Regular updates, information, support and a named staff contact from the public health, inclusion and awareness team
- Breast Cancer Now will reimburse reasonable expenses in line with our Expenses Policy
